NY Times: A Conversation With Native Americans on Race

Great video from The New York Times’s Emmy-award-winning and Oscar-nominated short documentary series!

In this series which explores the “Conversation on Race”, filmmakers speak with Native Americans about identity, blood quantum and other issues.

Message from the filmmakers:

“Despite the broad spectrum of indigenous identities who participated in our conversation, they shared the experience of living away from their respective reservations and communities.

We hope that this piece helps inspire more online and offline conversations that include an even wider range of Native voices living in, around and beyond reservation communities.”

Havasupai Peach Festival 2017

The Havasupai Peach Festival takes place in Supai, Arizona., usually the second weekend in August to celebrate their Fall harvest. During this time the Havasupai gather to sing & dance amongst their community and also invite in other neighboring tribes to help enjoy their festivities. Havasupai translates to, “People of the Blue Green Waters”. The Havasupai Lodge sells out for that weekend so be prepared to camp out in a designated area, all visitors are required to check in with their tourism office.

Havasupai

Keep in mind their Havasupai reservation is in a remote part of Northern Arizona, down in the Grand Canyon to be exact. As you depart for Hilltop, make sure you gas up your car in Peach Springs before leaving, that way you don’t run out of gas on your way back home. When you get to the Hilltop landing area, you have a choice of taking a helicopter ride ($35) or hiking 8 miles to their village.

New Poem by Sherman Alexie is Exactly What We Needed to Hear After Charlottesville

We already know Sherman Alexie has a certain way with words, always seeming to say the right thing to make you laugh, cry and think, dang, why didn’t I think of that?

ShermanAlexieBW.jpg

Earlier today he shared a new poem on Facebook which has a lot of people praising him once again with his word wizardry. In the poem, he addresses a lot of what we’re seeing, hearing and feeling in America today.

Here’s the poem in its entirety:

Hymn

Why do we measure people’s capacity
To love by how well they love their progeny?

18 Stunning Shots from Wikwemikong Annual Cultural Festival

Danielle Da Silva is an acclaimed photographer and founder of the Photographers Without Borders (Canada) organization (NGO).

She recently published a gorgeous pow wow photo essay on the PWB website and we just had to share it with you! In this photo series she visits the Wikwemikong Annual Culture Festival that’s held in unceded territory on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada.

Here’s a little bit about the pow wow in Danielle’s own words:

It was in 1961 that band member Rosemary Odjig raised the tradition of the “pow wow” in her hometown of Wikwemikong after witnessing a pow wow in another community and realizing the importance of practicing and remembering the teachings of her community’s ancestors. What started as the “Wikwemikong Indian Days” gathering almost 60 years ago is now known as the “Wikwemikong Annual Cultural Festival” and is revered as one of the largest and longest-running pow wows in North America…

The Spirit of Song and Voice – Allan Bonaise – Interview at Fort Totten Pow-Wow Celebrations

Listening and dancing to the music at a pow-wow is a wonderful experience. The drum brings out the spirit of the dancers, especially when the song is good. When the singers sing hard, you feel the music in your heart and soul. There were many amazing drums and singers at the Fort Totten Pow-wow Celebration on July 28-30, 2017, and I got a chance to visit and interview singer Allan Bonaise.

Allan Bonaise (Cree & Nakoda) is from Little Pine, Saskatchewan he started singing at the young age of 3, “I started singing when I was three years old. I’ve had many mentors, my late grandfather, my uncles and other singers from back home,” adding, “There is a round dance circle, a pow-wow circle, and a ceremony circle and all the songs that go with each circle.”

Bonaise said that he started, ‘Fly-In Eagle’ and stayed with them for a long time. He’s gone on to sing with a lot of other drum groups in the pow-wow circle.

Eclipse Fever Has Hit the Country, But Will Native America Be Watching? – Native American Eclipse Beliefs

All we’ve seen for the past couple weeks now are scientists and news anchors talking about the total solar eclipse happening on Monday, August 21, 2017.

Folks from all over will be descending onto small towns in America along the path of totality. But a lot of people have been wondering how our ancestors would react to such an event.

The National Museum of the American Indian has definitely been getting bombarded with questions, so they decided to write up a quick blog about the eclipse. I’ve taken a few of the quotes from the blog, but please make sure you read the original article on their website!

American Indian beliefs about the eclipse

The National Museum of American Indian has received numerous inquiries concerning the upcoming eclipse. Part of the museum’s mission is to provide a forum for Native people’s voices, so we went to the Internet to ask, “Does your tribe have any beliefs or protocols concerning the eclipse?” Here are some of the replies, with the correspondent’s Native affiliation (and where he or she is living now).

Did You Catch Tina Fey’s Standing Rock Shoutout on SNL?

Saturday Night Live, not one to shy away from politics and current events, brought in Tina Fey to talk about Charlottesville, Virginia on their popular Weekend Update segment.

Tina Fey’s segment starts at 0:40 in. About 3:00 in is when she starts talking about Natives and Standing Rock!

“It’s not our country. We stole it. We stole it from the Native Americans, and when they have a peaceful protest at Standing Rock we shoot at them with rubber bullets, but we let you chinless turds march the streets with semi-automatic weapons.”

And it’s not the first time people have talked about the hypocrisy of peaceful protesters at Standing Rock versus what happened at Charlottesville.

Check out these two memes that were floating around this past week:

The Sitt Nyein Aye Art’s & Cultural Center

Named for renowned Burmese Artist/Activist U Sitt Nyein Aye, this complex is actually a lumberyard set on two commercially zoned blocks (1 acre), with approximately 30,000 sq. ft. of covered space,  2 story building, warehouses, blab, blab, blab. The story of how we managed to score this primo piece of property is a story in itself for it was a hazardous journey.

Now we own it all, lock, stock and tomahawk but we face another daunting challenge, to bring the existing compound up to speed with regard to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Disabled People (CRPD), The International Disabilities Alliance (IDA) & The American’s With Disabilities Act (ADA).

Being that I am disabled as well as many of my friends I know the struggles a disabled person must endure during the course of just one day, both physical and the emotional aspects of our condition. I don’t simply want to comply with disabilities mandates, I want to embrace these mandates.

Lessons learned by the devastating Oakland Artist Collective Fire a few months back exposed the  critical need to address public safety from a variety of vantage points. What about the disabled people who would not be as ambulatory in escaping a fire? How would they escape & how would they survive?

Adding to our concerns is the fact we want to build an International Children’s Art Museum within this complex. How can we make this facility safe for everyone who enters this compound, especially kids? Toss in the myriad of shops, galleries and the visitors they will being to our complex and it is all to clear, Public Safety & Disabilities MUST be addressed from the very beginning NOT as an after thought.

After watching as our community races to comply with Disabilities mandates after the fact, spending millions to renovate and cobble ramps and doorways, we want to do things different and that is why I am here, to petition the global art community for assistance.

I mentioned 5 million dollars as the sum we would need to bring this arts center into compliance in the very beginning and believe me, this is a conservative estimate since fire mitigation is also necessary. So I am petitioning for the assistance from the international commercial sector as well as the citizens & artisans of the world in the evolution of this arts complex.

Along with funding it would be way cool to have engineers, architects and innovators in the field of Disabilities to assist in the construction of this arts complex. This could be a veritable showcase of  innovation   design that could revolutionize how we address the growing number of disabled clientele globally speaking.

Being that I am disabled I can safely say that it would be nice to be able to visit places that are accessible to the disabled regardless of handicap. To have freedom of movement and share in the beauty of art rather than wondering if your wheelchair will fit in the door. When I was wheelchair bound I hated crashing into people because there was no room on the walk path for me to pass.

Who would benefit from this Project? The Global Art Community & the disabled would by having another international arts and cultural destination. But for the disabled artists & entrepreneur this would be a blessing. To address the needs for the disabled from the very beginning would also open up opportunity for the disabled to get involved with this arts & cultural project from the very onset. Maybe have their own store or gallery.

The lumberyard is raw, ready for development and is prime for Innovations in the world of disabilities. This must be addressed before we can move forward. Addressing disabilities in the design & construction of this complex will save millions if we address this in the beginning. With the help of the global public and experienced professionals in the World of Disabilities this could be more than a real cool art & cultural center.

The Sitt Nyein Aye Arts & Cultural Center would be an international showcase or blueprint of how we can address the needs of disabled human beings in the future. Now that would make history in any ones book.

My mentor and dear friend the late Robert Perske championed the cause of the disabled and he continues to be my inspiration. If only he was here to see what I’ve gotten myself into now.

I know he would be proud…

Hi there 😉

I just wanted to send you a quick update with some breaking articles below. I’ve also included a link to an online summit I’m featured in that goes live today, with some cutting edge interview from holistic doctors/experts from around the world. You can watch us on video right now. It’s all free so check it out the online event by clicking here.
I’ll keep this email short and sweet, but promise to share some major upcoming events where I’ll be lecturing (and emcee’ing as well) later this year around the country.
Until next time!

PS and I know many have been asking about the organic raw CBD oil I take which I’ve found is the one that truly works for me. Vaccines are deliberately made with all sorts of bizarre ingredients, the CDC confirms. These ingredients include toxic heavy metals, animal blood components, human fetal tissue, monkey kidney cells, inflammatory chemicals that harm nerve cells, chemical preservatives, taste-enhancing chemicals (like MSG) and much more.
To claim that breastmilk is the gold standard in infant nutrition is an understatement. For a newborn, nothing comes close in nutrient density which is so perfectly customized for an infant as it grows. Breast-fed infants gain incredible protection from antibodies, proteins and immune cells in breastmilk. It defends against a myriad of pathogens in ways that are impossible through vaccination and other pharmaceuticals.

Her organization’s mission is to increase awareness about vitamin D and the crucial role it plays in many aspects of your health. Carole is on the cutting edge of vitamin D research, with her finger on the pulse of some of the world’s leading vitamin D scientists. Prior to this focus, Carole’s educational background included physics and mathematics, and she owned and managed an aerospace business.
Based on birth certificate data, teen birthrates are dropping. In 2015, the teen birthrate hit a record low, dropping 8%. In 2014, the birthrate per 1000 teen girls (aged 15 to 19) fell to 22.3 births. Since 1991 there’s been a 64% decrease.
The CDC is touting (as you can imagine) the success of birth control. After all, they’ve spent decades as “pharma’s marketing voice.”1 But, what if something else more sinister is responsible for the lower birthrate?

By now, I’m sure you’ve seen the USA Today article entitled, “Coconut oil isn’t healthy. It’s never been healthy”. Fear-mongering, attention-grabbing headlines certainly sell copy, but do not make for evidence-informed, high-quality science reporting.
Most of us know that too much alcohol can cause a fat liver and without a lifestyle change, the accumulation of that fat can lead to liver failure(which can be fatal). However, it seems that there’s another form of fat accumulation in the liver that has zero to do with consumption of alcohol and it’s called non-alcoholic liver disease or NAFDL. In developed countries, NAFDL is considered the most common liver disorder and (not shockingly) estimated to be present in 30% of American adults.
Did you know that our sense of smell is the only sense directly tied to the limbic area of the brain, which is considered the emotional control center? This means that when essential oils are inhaled, they go directly to the brain. Our other four senses – taste, sight, touch, and hearing – are first routed through the thalamus before reaching designated areas of the brain. Because the limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, therapeutic-grade essential oils can have unbelievable physiological and psychological effects.
You probably have at least one box of baking soda in your home right now. If you’re like many Americans, you might have a box in your pantry for baking, one in your refrigerator to absorb odors and another under your kitchen sink to use for cleaning. What you might not have considered is that baking soda can be used for health purposes, too, so you might want to stash another box in your medicine cabinet.
The Fluoride Action Network (FAN), along with a coalition of environmental and public health groups has filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in response to their denial of our petition under Section 21 of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) seeking a ban on water fluoridation.
Nightshades are a specific group of plants belonging to the Solanaceae family which includes over 2,000 species. They are also some of the most popular foods consumed today; they include tomatoes, potatoes, all types of peppers, and eggplant. Not truly a nightshade member but containing the same inflammation-inducing alkaloids are blueberries, huckleberries, goji berries and ashwaganda (Indian Ginseng).
According to U.S. heart experts, coconut oil is as unhealthy as beef fat and butter. Experts say this because it’s packed with saturated fat which they claim raises “bad” cholesterol. however, it’s not that simple…
Detoxifying the breast represents a good solution for purification of the toxins that linger in organism. Detoxing is one way to prevent the cancer. The newest research reveals that the most common cause of cancer is occurring on the places where cosmetic preparation are used in the underarm area. Breast cancer depends from the hormones whose growth depends from the estrogen levels…
There’s nothing more uncomfortable than sitting down to a nice meal or relaxing by the fire after a day in the great outdoors only to feel a hitchhiking tick crawling up the back of your neck. Well, you may never encounter such a scenario ever again after you learn this genius technique. The process is extremely simple yet highly effective. It will have you asking, “Why didn’t I think of this?!”
(And it’s ORGANIC!)
In over 2  years of having my site  I’d never been an affiliate for or even endorsed a product. I’ve been asked by a few big name brands, but they never had the right fit.

Then, while traveling in December, I tripped over a clear phone cord that was left out and I came down hard. I don’t think my friends even knew how bad off I was. It wasn’t just the pain I was experiencing, but I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t focus, and the torn shoulder, separated AC joint, hand/wrist injury and broken collar bone didn’t help either.

Dakota Access Pipeline Already Had Its First Leak

Posted By Toyacoyah Brown May 14th, 2017 Blog

No one wants to say, “I told you so,” but this is what we were all afraid of. The Dakota Access Pipeline has already had a leak and it originally went unreported to the public due to the size.

From an NBC News interview:

“These kinds of spills do occur,” Rebecca Craven, program director at the Pipeline Safety Trust, told NBC News. “Sometimes they’re contained on company property, and sometimes they do more damage as they escape off company property.”

The public often does not know about those types of leaks because of their size. Companies do not have to report oil pipeline leaks to the federal government unless they’re over five barrels, which is 210 gallons of oil, and if they clean them up quickly.

The following is a statement from Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman Dave Archambault II in response to reports of an oil spill from the Dakota Access pipeline along its South Dakota leg:

“The Dakota Access pipeline has not yet started shipping the proposed half million barrels of oil per day and we are already seeing confirmed reports of oil spills from the pipeline. This is what we have said all along: oil pipelines leak and spill. Our lawsuit challenging this dangerous project is ongoing and it’s more important than ever for the court to step in and halt additional accidents before they happen – not just for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and our resources but for the 17 million people whose drinking water is at risk.”

What do you guys think? Just a drop in the bucket and nothing to be concerned about? Or is this just a glimpse into bigger problems down the line?
