Forty years ago, a group of Native Hawaiians crossed the Pacific Ocean using only the stars as their guide aboard the Hokule’a, a voyaging canoe built in the style of their ancestors from 600 years ago. When it successfully made the 2,000+ mile journey without any modern navigation equipment, the Hokule’a sparked a rebirth of native Hawaiian culture and identity.
